Warning of global food security concerns
Guterres and Dr. Al-Maatouq discuss the latest developments in the humanitarian scene
The Chairman of IICO, Dr. Abdullah Al-Maatouq, briefed the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, on the most prominent relief, humanitarian and development efforts of IICO in Syria, Yemen, Pakistan, and Afghanistan against the backdrop of the difficult humanitarian situation in these countries due to conflicts and disasters.
Dr. Al-Maatouq, who holds the position of Special Advisor to the Secretary-General of the United Nations, also discussed the latest developments of the Foundation for Sustainable Development, which IICO seeks to establish in search of sustainable solutions to the phenomenon of poverty, in implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.
The UN meeting, which was held on November 4, touched on concerns related to global food security, especially with the continuation of the Russian-Ukrainian war, as the two countries are among the world’s largest wheat exporters.
It is noted that Dr. Al-Maatouq has been the Special Advisor to the Secretary-General of the United Nations since 2017 to date.
He served as the UN Secretary-General’s Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs under former Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon from 2012 to 2016 for four consecutive years.
As Dr. Al-Maatouq meets with the Secretary-General from time to time to discuss some humanitarian issues and their repercussions in the afflicted countries.
